What you eat during pregnancy shapes your baby's health for decades. Here's a trimester-by-trimester nutrition guide tailored for Indian dietary patterns.
Indian diets are rich in variety but often low in key pregnancy nutrients โ iron, calcium, protein, vitamin D, and B12. Strategic eating, not expensive supplements, fills most gaps.
First trimester (weeks 1โ12). Focus on folic acid (spinach, lentils, fortified cereals), vitamin B6 for nausea (bananas, chickpeas), and ginger tea to reduce morning sickness. Small, frequent meals work better than 3 large ones. Folic acid supplementation (400โ800 mcg) is essential.
Second trimester (weeks 13โ26). Iron needs double. Add iron-rich foods (ragi, spinach, dates, jaggery, chicken) paired with vitamin C (amla, oranges, lemon) for absorption. Avoid tea/coffee with meals โ tannins block iron absorption by up to 60%.
Third trimester (weeks 27โ40). Protein demands peak (75โ100g daily). Dal, paneer, eggs, curd, chicken, and nuts become essential. Also increase calcium (ragi, sesame seeds, dairy, green leafy vegetables) for baby's bone development.
Foods to avoid throughout: Raw/undercooked meats and eggs, unpasteurized dairy, high-mercury fish (king mackerel, swordfish), papaya and pineapple in early pregnancy, unwashed produce, and any alcohol.
Hydration target: 2.5โ3 liters daily. Nimbu pani, coconut water, and herbal teas count. Dehydration worsens nausea, constipation, and UTIs โ all common pregnancy issues.
Supplements most Indian women need: Folic acid (preconception onwards), iron (second trimester), calcium (third trimester), and vitamin D (throughout). Confirm with your gynecologist based on your specific lab values.
Weight gain targets. Normal BMI: 11โ16 kg total. Underweight: 13โ18 kg. Overweight: 7โ11 kg. Gaining too little or too much both carry risks for baby. Track monthly, not daily.
